Details

Application summary Japan Science and Technology (JST) has participated in the e-ASIA Joint Research Program (e-ASIA JRP) and supported multilateral international collaborative research projects since 2012. The e-ASIA JRP aims to strengthen regional S&T research and development capabilities and resolve common challenges in the region, with a central focus on the Southeast Asian region. As part of the program, in collaboration with overseas funding organizations participating in e-ASIA JRP, JST launches a joint call for proposals in the field of "Alternative Energy" on the topics of “'Urban and biological wastes to energy, useful biochemicals, and biofuels' 'New fuel cell science and technologies' and 'Alternative energies in the tropics and sub-tropics'” To be eligible for this funding, Japan-based researchers must be involved in a collaboration and involve the participation of at least two other e-ASIA members joining the call. JST will support each Japan-based team with a “new fund” up to 27 million Japanese Yen as direct cost for 36 months. The overhead cost of 30% of direct cost will be added separately.
Application targets Any independent researcher personally affiliated with and actively conducting research at a domestic Japanese research institution (or who will fulfill this requirement by the start of the research project), regardless of nationality, is eligible to apply as a Principal Investigator. Japan-based researchers from industry are eligible to apply as a Principal Investigator in the joint research project in the Japan-based team.

Messages Japan-based applicants are required to complete a research ethics training program conducted by the research institute with which they are affiliated and then declare the completion of the program to JST via e-Rad by the proposal submission deadline of the call for proposals. If it is difficult for them to undertake a program provided by their own institute, they should contact JST to register for a research ethics program provided by Association for the Promotion of Research Integrity, APRIN before submission of their applications. Unless applicants complete a research ethics program, their application will be deemed ineligible for funding.
